The Sacred Valley of the Incas is a mesmerizing region that beckons travelers with its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and ancient wonders. This region offers a glimpse into the heart of the Inca civilization. Thus, this full-day tour promises an immersive journey through some of the Sacred Valley’s most significant sites, where history, tradition, and natural beauty converge.
The journey begins in Chinchero, a quaint village often referred to as the birthplace of the rainbow. Chinchero is renowned for its vibrant Andean textiles, crafted using techniques passed down through generations. Visitors can witness the intricate process of weaving and dyeing, using natural materials like plant extracts. The local artisans demonstrate their skills, creating colorful textiles that tell stories of their ancestors. The village itself is steeped in history, with its colonial church and ancient terraces that once served as agricultural platforms.
From Chinchero, the tour continues to the Maras Salt Mines, an extraordinary landscape of over 3,000 salt pans clinging to the mountainside. These salt pans have been in use since pre-Inca times and are still harvested by local families today. The sight of these shimmering, white terraces against the backdrop of the Sacred Valley is truly breathtaking. The natural salt springs that feed the pans create a unique and sustainable method of salt production, offering visitors a chance to learn about this traditional practice and its significance to the local economy.
Next, the tour takes you to Moray, an archaeological site that showcases the ingenuity of Inca engineering. Moray is composed of a series of concentric terraces resembling a massive amphitheater. These terraces were likely used as an agricultural laboratory by the Incas, who experimented with different crops and microclimates. Each terrace at Moray has its own distinct temperature and humidity, allowing for the cultivation of a diverse array of plants. This innovative approach highlights the Inca’s advanced understanding of agriculture and their ability to adapt to their environment.
The final highlight of the tour is Ollantaytambo, a town that stands as a living testament to the Inca civilization. Ollantaytambo is home to an impressive archaeological site, featuring massive stone terraces, temples, and fortresses. The town itself is one of the few places where the original Inca urban layout has been preserved. Walking through its narrow streets, visitors can feel the echoes of the past and marvel at the architectural prowess of the Incas. The imposing Temple of the Sun and the enigmatic stone structures offer a glimpse into the spiritual and defensive strategies of this ancient empire.

When deciding whether to visit the Sacred Valley or Machu Picchu first, travelers often ask about the benefits of each starting point. The Sacred Valley, at a lower altitude, can serve as a gradual introduction to the region’s elevation, easing acclimatization before ascending to the higher altitude of Machu Picchu.
It also sets a historical narrative, as you’ll see the development of Inca civilization before reaching its pinnacle at Machu Picchu. Conversely, starting with Machu Picchu might appeal to those who prefer to experience the iconic site first, especially if they’re well acclimatized to high altitudes. Logistics also play a role; the Sacred Valley is en route to Machu Picchu from Cusco, making it a convenient first stop.
Ultimately, personal health, preferences, and itinerary constraints should guide this decision, and consulting with travel experts or tour operators is recommended for tailored advice.
Choosing to embark on a guided tour of the city was an excellent decision. The extensive knowledge possessed by our tour guide about the city’s history and culture made the experience truly captivating.
